    Our History & Leadership

    Freemason Lodge Sydney
The Lodge Room at the Sydney Masonic Centre, a sacred space for Masonic ritual, reflection, and unity.

    Inside Our Lodge Room

The Lodge Room of Lodge Southern Cross is located within the Sydney Masonic Centre, one of Australia’s most respected Masonic buildings and a landmark of Brutalist architecture in the heart of the city.

With its distinctive design and cultural significance, the Centre provides a respectful and purposeful setting for our gatherings. The Lodge Room itself is a symbolic space where Freemasons come together in reflection, connection, and shared values.Every detail from the square and compasses to the officer chairs, is placed with meaning, expressing Masonic principles such as equality, learning, and tradition.

Though simple in form, the room is rich in spirit. It fosters growth, respect, and belonging, offering a quiet place where good men gather to strengthen their character and continue the legacy of Freemasonry in Australia.

    Our Neck Tie

Every colour in the Lodge Southern Cross tie has been chosen with care and intention. Each one carries symbolic meaning that reflects not only the values we uphold as Freemasons, but also the stages of a Mason's journey and the hierarchical structure of the Craft. Together, these colours form a visual narrative, a reminder of our origins, our obligations, and our collective purpose as members of Lodge Southern Cross.

    White: Purity
Symbolising purity, white forms the foundation of Masonic identity, just as the pure lambskin apron forms the base of all Masonic aprons. On our tie, white borders every other colour, reminding us that the Entered Apprentice apron is the starting point for all progression within Craft Masonry and the wider Masonic orders.

Cambridge Blue (Light Blue): The Craft
Representing the Craft and the Brethren of the Lodge, this colour is closely associated with the Worshipful Master and Officers. The ascending steps within the light blue band symbolise continuous personal development. As Masons, we are always learning and striving to better ourselves and serve our communities.

Oxford Blue (Dark Blue): The Grand Lodge
Dark blue represents the Grand Lodge and its collective of Masters and Rulers in the Craft. It signifies unity across all Lodges under the Constitution of the United Grand Lodge of NSW & ACT. Like the steps in the Cambridge Blue, this band reflects the responsibility of leadership to lead by example through continued growth and understanding.

    Gold: The Grand Master
Gold honours the Most Worshipful Grand Master. It symbolises the loyalty, respect and ongoing support that Lodge Southern Cross extends to the sovereign head of our jurisdiction.

Black: The Secrets of the Craft
Black represents the deeper mysteries and the hidden teachings of the Third Degree, the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. Within the black band, illuminated by the light from above, are found the symbols of our Craft and our Lodge. These serve as a quiet reminder of the profound truths that lie at the heart of Freemasonry.

    Emblems of Distinction

    Our Cufflinks

The Lodge Southern Cross cufflinks are uniquely designed for our Lodge. They feature the Square and Compasses set within the Southern Cross and include 33 points in total, each rich in symbolic meaning and closely tied to Masonic tradition.

Subtle yet distinctive, they represent the values we carry with us beyond the Lodge room.

    Our Master Mason Jewel

In 1981, to mark our 100th anniversary, Lodge Southern Cross was granted a Centenary Jewel by the United Grand Lodge of NSW and ACT. It is awarded only to those who have been raised to the 3rd Degree.

The design is deeply symbolic: the Cambridge Blue ribbon represents peace, the number 91 marks our place on the register, and the top bar bears the name of our Grand Lodge. At the centre, the Ouroboros symbolises eternity, the intertwined ropes reflect fraternal bonds, and the letter C stands for Centenary.

Lodge Southern Cross Across the Globe

Lodge Southern Cross is part of a proud Masonic tradition that spans the globe. We share our name and fraternal bonds with Lodges in other jurisdictions, each carrying the Southern Cross name with pride in their own communities.
