🤝 Welcome

Lodge Southern Cross No. 91 warmly invites all brethren to our February meeting at the Sydney Masonic Centre. This evening features a First Degree Walkabout, followed by a Burns Night South.

Entered Apprentices are especially encouraged to attend. This is ideal education for EAs, and a valuable refresher for Fellowcraft and Master Masons alike. All Masons are welcome.

🧭 Work for the Evening: First Degree Walkabout

The First Degree is where a man begins his Masonic journey. It sets the foundation for everything that follows, introducing the core themes of character, self-improvement, and the work of building a better life through principles and practice.

What is a Walkabout?

A Walkabout is a guided, step-by-step exploration of the degree. It slows the ritual down and makes space for explanation, context, and questions. It helps brethren connect the movements, symbols, and key moments of the ceremony with what they mean and why they matter.

For Entered Apprentices, it turns the First Degree from something you experienced once into something you can truly understand. For experienced brethren, it is a chance to revisit the essentials and sharpen your own understanding of the Craft.

Why the First Degree matters

The First Degree is about beginnings, orientation, and learning to take the first deliberate steps toward a more considered life. It teaches that growth is not accidental. It is built, tested, and strengthened over time, with guidance from those who have walked the path before us.

This evening is designed to be practical and grounded. Expect clarity, not complexity. Bring your questions and your curiosity.

🎻 Burns Night in the South

Following the meeting, we will enjoy a Burns Night South, including the great Scottish tradition of Haggis. Yes, we will have a haggis in the South.

Who was Robert Burns?

Robert Burns (1759–1796) is Scotland’s national poet, celebrated for his poetry and songs that gave voice to ordinary people with warmth, humour, and moral clarity. His work endures because it speaks plainly about dignity, brotherhood, and the value of honest character.

Freemasons have a long-standing interest in Burns. He was a Freemason, and his life and writing are often associated with themes that resonate strongly in the Craft: fellowship, equality, integrity, and respect for the common man.

The Haggis tradition and the Address

Burns Suppers commonly feature the ceremonial Address to a Haggis, a spirited tribute that is part theatre, part tradition, and all fellowship. This year, we are fortunate to have our very own kilt-wearing Mason to deliver the Address to the Haggis.

Come for the education, stay for the fellowship, and enjoy a uniquely memorable South.
